Spring Break Adventures in Utah Snow and Sun
When most families were packing swimsuits and sunscreen for beach vacations, our crew of four decided to head in the opposite direction—toward the snow-capped peaks of Utah. With my teen son, a cousin, and a close friend in tow, we set off for a spring break adventure in the mountains. We weren’t disappointed: just days before our arrival, Utah’s Wasatch Range received over two feet of fresh snow, promising us the perfect blend of powder and sunshine.
Maximizing the Magic of Spring Skiing
With meticulous planning, we made the most of our week-long trip by exploring three distinct ski resorts and a unique sports park. Spring skiing in Utah offered everything we hoped for: warm weather, shorter lift lines, fewer crowds, and off-peak pricing. From well-known resorts like Brighton and Solitude to the charming and lesser-known Beaver Mountain, we experienced a fantastic range of skiing and snowboarding opportunities.
During our downtime, we dined at standout local restaurants and explored thrift stores that yielded one-of-a-kind treasures. Every day felt like a new chapter in a story filled with snow, sun, and surprises.
Day One: Playtime at Woodward Park City
After a night in SLC at the wonderous Hotel Monaco, we picked up our rental gear at Christy Sports, and our adventure began at Woodward Park City, an action sports haven that delighted the kids with its 66,000-square-foot indoor playground for skateboarding, parkour, and BMX.
Outdoors, the park featured expansive terrain for skiing and snowboarding, along with the longest tubing lanes in Utah. After a thrilling day, we refueled at Slapfish Coastal Seafood Kitchen, savoring fresh, healthy bowls of mahi-mahi, ahi tuna, and locally sourced greens.
We capped off the evening with a scenic drive to Logan and checked into the Marriott Springhill Suites. Dinner at Le Nonne, an inviting Italian restaurant, was a highlight. From savory pasta dishes to perfectly cooked steaks, the meal set a high standard for the rest of our trip.
Hidden Gems: Beaver Mountain
Day two took us to Beaver Mountain, a family-owned resort brimming with charm. The lodge’s simple, welcoming vibe complemented the friendly atmosphere. Marge, the daughter-in-law of the founders, even greeted us at the ticket window, and told us the story of how her husband named one of the chairlifts after her — Marge’s Triple.
With 828 acres of terrain and minimal lift lines, Beaver Mountain offered something for everyone. While the boys tackled advanced runs, my friend and I rediscovered our skiing legs on beginner and intermediate slopes. An unintended detour onto a double black diamond – aptly named Skid Row – tested our limits—and our tree-dodging skills—but it added to the adventure.
Evenings in Logan featured satisfying meals, including top-notch fajitas and quesadillas at Café Sabor. The local dining scene never failed to impress.
Big Mountain Vibes at Brighton
Brighton Resort, nestled in Big Cottonwood Canyon, lived up to its reputation for stellar snow and a family-friendly atmosphere. With over 500 inches of annual snowfall, its powder was light, dry, and perfect for skiing. The boys spent hours in the terrain park, while we adults enjoyed well-groomed green and blue runs under sunny skies.
Spring skiing’s warmer afternoons did make the snow a bit slushy, so we learned to hit the slopes early. Temperatures reached a balmy 60 degrees, allowing us to shed layers and fully enjoy the sunshine.
Solitude and Sweet Goodbyes
Our final day brought us to Solitude Mountain Resort. With 1,200 acres of terrain and breathtaking views, it was the perfect finale. The quiet slopes lived up to the resort’s name, offering moments of peaceful skiing amidst stunning scenery.
For dinner, we ventured to the Porcupine Bar and Grille, indulging in hearty dishes and finishing with their whimsical signature dessert: a porcupine-shaped brownie sundae. It was the perfect way to toast a trip full of unforgettable memories.
Utah, Until We Meet Again
Utah’s blend of powdery slopes, warm hospitality, and unique experiences made our spring break truly special. From the bustling terrain parks to the serene runs at Solitude, each day offered a new adventure. As we packed our bags and said goodbye to the mountains, we knew this was only the beginning. Next time, we’ll return with an even bigger itinerary to explore more of what this snowy paradise has to offer.
